Feeling Floaty

Metabolic Measures

I had all intentions of getting this blog written straight after my float – but that’s until I realised how dopey and relaxed you feel afterwards! It took me ages to get motivated enough to put ‘pen to paper’ and document my experience of this floating thing!

Armed with a million questions, myself and Jarrad – the Director of Metabolic Measures arrived at the brand new shiny Life Spring Float Centre in Cockburn for our booked float. The Life Spring has only just opened and is offering a 2 for 1 deal at the moment which is a BARGAIN!

Jarrad feeling tired from his constant schedule of early mornings and late evenings scanning the fitness conscious and curious people of Perth and me feeling sore from Xtend Barre the night before – had us hoping that this float lived up to our expectations!

The grapevine told me that “it’s just like that episode on the Simpsons”, and “an hours float gives you the same feeling as a full nights sleep”. I had my own similar reservations that any normal person would – what if I feel claustrophobic and freak out in there! – what if my mind starts talking to me about all my problems and fears and … other stuff? – is the water CLEAN!? – are you supposed to wear your bathers? – why wouldn’t I just get in my own bathtub with some epsom salts?

I’m here to give you the inside scoop on my experience and answer my own questions by trying it for myself!

Firstly, reasons to try a float (also known by some as a ‘Sensory Deprivation’ experience)

  • Health! Soaking in an Epsom Salt bath is one of the most effective means of making the magnesium your body needs readily available.Epsom Salt also delivers sulfates, which medical research indicates are needed for the formation of brain tissue, joint proteins and the proteins that line the walls of the digestive tract. Studies show that sulfates also stimulate the pancreas to generate digestive enzymes and help to detoxify the body’s residue of medicines and environmental contaminants.
  • Sore Muscles! see above – floating speeds up recovery from injuries, sore joints and muscles and reduces lactic acid build up and reduces pain and inflammation
  • Stress relief! Flotation therapy can help by clearing cortisol and other stress hormones from the body, and at the same time releasing endorphins, which are natural feel-good chemicals.
  • Relaxation! Rarely do we ever take the time out, in complete silence, to relax all muscles including that brain muscle!

You couldn’t get a nicer person to introduce you to floating! Narelle welcomed us into her little float bubble, getting us to take our shoes off straight away and get comfortable. We filled out our consent form, cue silent giggles regarding the bit about ‘you are responsible for your thoughts and actions whilst in the tank’ hehe! and proceeded to have our little induction to floating. Narelle gave us a total run down on floating, how you get into the tank, what’s in the water, and took care of any concerns.

You have a shower before you hop in the tank, its a nice body temperature and slightly murky with the salts. They have earplugs, you don’t have to close the lid if you think you might feel claustrophobic and you can have the cool coloured lights on, or turn them off with the touch of a button. There’s even an emergency button if you feel you need rescuing!

What I didn’t expect was how AWESOME and soft my skin felt whilst in the water. It takes a while to completely relax, but there’s a big gap there where I’m quite sure I fell asleep – that’s totally ok by the way! You cannot sink.

Afterwards, you feel AMAZING and relaxed, you can sit in the chill out zone on the couches there and enjoy a cup of mango tea, biccie and minty. In that order = yum! You will wonder if you are right to drive home…. easy does it – only leave when you are ready!

So I guess I answered my own questions and more!

what if I feel claustrophobic and freak out in there? you probably wont – the tank is plenty big enough and you can have the lid on or off, and lights on or off.

what if my mind starts talking to me about all my problems and fears and … other stuff? we definitely dont get enough time to be alone with our thoughts, but no issues for me, and certainly no hallucinations!

is the water CLEAN!? yes, fresh water in every float, and a super amazing water filtration system

are you supposed to wear your bathers? nope – the whole room is locked and secure – you have a shower and there’s no need not to be naked!

why wouldn’t I just get in my own bathtub with some epsom salts? you can! but um…that’s a lot of salts! and my bath isnt big enough for me to float around like this!

Definitely TRY IT and see for yourself! Its an amazing feeling afterwards – and you wont regret it! Caution – such relaxation is so good for you – you may become seriously addicted!
